Project: “ Sensitisation and capacity building for judicial and extra- judicial stakeholders for the effective implementation of women’s rights in West Africa”

The project aims to raise awareness and build the capacity of various categories of actors to better take into account women’s rights. It targets judicial and extra-judicial actors, including traditional and religious authorities. It is composed of 7 activities:  (1) A sub-regional meeting to ensure ownership of the project by the national WILDAF/FEDDAF networks responsible for carrying out the activities; (2) Production of various materials on women’s rights, care for women victims of violence and gender; (3) Organisation of information and awareness-raising days for a number of actors, who will act as relays for raising awareness among their peers; (4) training in women’s rights and gender for magistrates, lawyers and police officers in activity / negotiation of the integration of modules on women’s rights and gender in the training curricula of magistrates, lawyers and police officers; (5) production and dissemination of a liaison bulletin between project participants; (6) data collection and production of annual reports on the consideration of women’s rights by the target groups; (7) monitoring and coordination of the project

Objective: To contribute to the improvement of the effectiveness of women’s rights in 7 West African countries by strengthening the capacities of a critical mass of magistrates, lawyers, police officers, doctors, traditional authorities and religious authorities in order to better take into account women’s rights.

Results:

  • A total of 4495 magistrates, lawyers, traditional and religious leaders, doctors and judicial police officers in the sub-region were sensitised and trained to contribute to the improvement of the effectiveness of these rights.    
  • Availability of various tools adapted to the sensitisation and training of magistrates, lawyers, police officers, doctors, traditional and religious authorities for a better consideration of women’s rights in their work.
  • 583 magistrates, lawyers and police officers sensitive to gender issues and to the difficulties women face in enjoying their rights were trained and equipped to apply legal provisions on women’s rights during conflict resolution in the 7 countries concerned by the project. 
  • 185 doctors are better trained and equipped to receive women in distress and better identify violations that are brought to their attention. 
  • 189 traditional religious authorities are better prepared to promote respect for women’s rights in accordance with national texts and international principles.
  • 4495 magistrates, lawyers, police officers, doctors, traditional and religious authorities have received awareness-raising or training tools through their peers who participated in awareness-raising days or training workshops.
  • 7 project countries have initiated actions towards the training schools of the target groups to integrate the modules developed within the framework of the project into the initial and ongoing training curricula of the target groups.
  • Agreements in principle have been obtained and conferences on women’s rights and gender have been started for students in training in these institutions, the future officers who will take up their duties.
