Project: Advocacy and lobbying for the signature and ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women

Objective: to conduct Advocacy and lobbying for to obtain the signature and ratifications necessary for the entry into force of the Protocol help women’s rights organizations organize themselves efficiently to support the process of adoption, ratification necessary for the entry into force of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on Women’s Rights.

Results

  • Togo, the 15th State, deposited with the African Union (AU) its instrument of ratification of the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) on the Rights of Women. On the 15 ratifications which permitted the entry into force of the protocol on November 25, 2005, eights come from West Africa. This was 30 days after the 15th deposit of the instrument of ratification as provided for in the treaty text.
  • Other countries like Burkina Faso and Guinea are almost at the end of the process for the deposit of their respective instrument of ratification.
  • Thanks to the network’s continuous advocacy work, 14 out of 15 countries in West Africa have ratified the Protocol. 
  •  Availability of the protocol in a language accessible to all the population.
